Welcome to the Page Update Service

A SiteBuilder link is a pointer to an article, a search, or a publication list in ProQuest. You can include many SiteBuilder links on a single HTML page that you create. All SiteBuilder links contain information about the account they were created with. Links can also contain security restrictions--such as an expiration date or password protection--set by the site administrator.

The Page Update Service lets you update account (account name and password) and security settings for all of the SiteBuilder links that you include in an HTML page. It provides a convenient way to avoid updating each link individually.

For example, Page Update would be very useful when your organization changes its site security policy, or if there is a change to your site's ProQuest account name or account password.

Additionally, the Page Update Service automatically updates the encoding format used by the links if a newer format is available.

The HTML page I want to update

Enter the full filename (including drive letter and directory location) of the HTML page you want to update. Or, click Browse to find and specify the filename.

For example:

c:\fallterm\courses\mypage.htm

The links I want to update

This information is the criteria used to select the links that will be updated on your page.

URL prefix

The URL prefix is the string of characters that all SiteBuilder links start with. In most cases, this string will be the default value, http://proquest.umi.com/pqdlink?. Change this setting only if you have previously changed the default for SiteBuilder links on your page. If there is no change, leave the default value; do not leave this field blank.

Account password

Enter the password for the ProQuest account used to create the links you want to change. (In most cases, all of the SiteBuilder links on a page are created using the same account.) The Page Update Service will only update links that have this account password stored in their encrypted certificates. All other links will be left unchanged. Do not leave this field blank.

What is a certificate? When a visitor to your site clicks a SiteBuilder link, ProQuest encodes all of the information about the link before returning the requested page to the user. This encoded information is called the certificate. It contains information about the SiteBuilder link's function, including account information (account name and password); security settings (such as link password protection or IP address restrictions); and details about what the link is designed to do.

IMPORTANT: You must know the ProQuest account password for your links if you wish to use the Page Update Service.

The link information I want to update includes...

The third section of the Page Update Service form is where you enter the new values for any settings in the links that you wish to change. For example, you might enter a new account name, or a new link password. Only the items that you enter here will be changed. All other settings will remain the same.

URL prefix

If you have changed the default link prefix, enter the new prefix here. If there is no change, leave this field blank.

Account name

The account name is a unique alphanumeric string.   When you insert a ProQuest page link into your Internet or intranet page, embedded in that link will be an account name, which along with the embedded password eliminates the need for your users to login to ProQuest. They will see only those ProQuest pages that you want them to see.

If you want to associate a different account name with your links than the one used to create them, enter the new account name here. If there is no change, leave this field blank.

Account password

An account password is also required to access ProQuest. A default password is assigned when the account is created. As with the account name, the account password will also be embedded in any links to ProQuest pages that you create.

IMPORTANT: If you want to change the account password here, first use the Change Password pick on ProQuest's Preferences page. If you do not do this, the link will fail when you attempt to update your page.

Expiration date

The date displayed in this field reflects the maximum, valid life-span of the link. Edit the date to specify an earlier expiration date.
Enter a date in this format:

DD/MM/YYYY

Link password

If you want to password-protect the links on your page, enter the password here. When a user clicks a SiteBuilder link on your page, they will be prompted to enter the link password. The link password is not the same as the account password.

bullet.gif (826 bytes) The password can be all letters (alpha), all numbers (numeric), or a combination (alphanumeric).
bullet.gif (826 bytes) The password can be one to sixteen characters long.
bullet.gif (826 bytes) The link password is not case-sensitive. SKY is the same password as sky.
bullet.gif (826 bytes) If the links on your page are currently password-protected, select the check box labeled Remove to cancel password protection.
Allow user to store link password
If you specify a link password, visitors to your page will normally have to enter the link password everytime they click one of your links. Select this check box to provide users with a way to enter the link password a single time during their session.

When you select this check box, a check box labeled Remember this password will display the first time a user clicks a link on your page. By entering the link password and then selecting this check box, the user will be freed from the burden of re-entering the password everytime they click a link during their session.

Restrict use to these IP addresses

Every workstation on a network has a unique, identifying IP (internet protocol) address. If you want to make the links on your page available from specific workstations only, type their IP addresses in the text scroll box. Use a semicolon to separate multiple IP addresses.

If you enter multiple IP addresses, and the scroll box does not wrap to the next line, it is not necessary to press Enter or Return to create a new line. However, be sure to use a semicolon to separate each address.

Select the check box labeled Remove to cancel any current IP address restrictions you have set.

Tip: Enter IP prefixes to specify all of the workstations in a group or department. For example, specify 165.215 rather than the full four-part IP address of each workstation. Doing this will not only save you administrative time, it will also keep the link shorter since it stores any IP address restrictions.

Read, then click Update

When you're sure that you've entered all of the correct information in the previous sections, read the bullet items and then click Update

IMPORTANT: If the page you are updating was originally stored on a remote server, save the page to a temporary location on your workstation, then upload the updated page to the remote server.
