Welcome to the Master Link Generator

A SiteBuilder link is a pointer to an article, a search, or a publication list in ProQuest. Most SiteBuilder links request specific documents, or perform specific searches. Only a SiteBuilder administrator or builder, using the Link Editor, can change these links to perform a different search or retrieve a different article for example.

A master link is a template for SiteBuilder links. It does not reference a specific document, search, or publication list. Instead, the master link contains only enough information to identify ProQuest account, the type of service that is being requested, and optional access control restrictions. Document IDs, search query strings, and other specifics of the request are left out, so that you can change or add them later.

The Master Link Generator allows you to create master links for each of the four basic SiteBuilder request types: Article Retrieve, Search by Word, Search for Publication, and Article Availability. Using these four master links, you can build a link to any article, search, or publication list available through ProQuest by supplying the remaining details of the request.

Generating Master Links

To generate your set of four master links:
  1. Enter your account name and account password in the blanks provided under the Account Information heading.
  2. Add access control constraints to the master links. Options include:
    • setting a link expiration date (determines link life span),
    • IP address restrictions (your SiteBuilder links will only work from computers with IP addresses included in the range you specify),
    • and specifying a link password (anytime users click a SiteBuilder link created using your master links, a password prompt will display).
  3. Click Generate master links

Capturing Your Master Links

When you click Generate master links, your four master links display on a single page, with a section for each of the links. Each section will include a yellow bar containing the Test Link and Modify Link options, and a brief description of the parameters that you can add to the master link.

Click Help on any yellow bar for specific instructions on capturing the master links.

Figure 1 demonstrates how the section corresponding to the Article Retrieve master link will appear. Similar sections display for the Search by Word, Search for Publication, and Article Availability master links.

How to use the yellow bar

The article retrieve URL displays an article in the current frame or window. It accepts the following parameters:

  • DID: Document ID (required)
  • FMT: Format
  • QTY: Page image quality

Using Your Master Links

The Search by Word and Search for Publication links do not have any required parameters. If no parameters are supplied, their master links will return a generic Search by Word or Search for Publication page. The Document Retrieve and Document Availability links require a document ID. If the document ID parameter is not supplied, their master links will not function.

Once you capture your master links, you can use them as the basis for creating SiteBuilder links. To create a SiteBuilder link, add required and optional parameters to a master link URL. You can then add your new SiteBuilder link to a Web page or custom application.

To add a parameter, display the link's URL in an editor, and add the parameters to the URL as follows. All parameters are separated from other parameters by ampersands (&). The name and value of a parameter are separated by an equals sign (=).

For example, to add the document ID parameter to a master Article Retrieve link:

  1. Begin with the master link:
         http://proquest.umi.com/pqdlink?Ver=1&Exp=07-01-2003&Cert=dsfbodf623sdf78f

  2. Add an ampersand and "DID" (the document ID parameter name shown in Figure 1). Add an 'equals' sign followed by the document ID. For example:
         http://proquest.umi.com/pqdlink?Ver=1&Exp=07-01-2003&Cert=dsfbodf623sdf78f&DID=12345

  3. Finally, add a format specification (not required).
         http://proquest.umi.com/pqdlink?Ver=1&Exp=07-01-2003&Cert=dsfbodf623sdf78f&DID=12345&FMT=Cite

You can now include your new SiteBuilder link in a Web page or any other Web-enabled document or system.
