Shanghai String Quartet
Where: Mechanics Hall, 321 Main St., Worcester.

How much: $24, $22; $10, with a college ID.
The joke is that every time the Shanghai String Quartet performs with the Tokyo String Quartet, the musicians demand to be arranged on stage symmetrically. Both of these ostensibly Asian quartets include one Caucasian musician, which, in both cases, is the newest member.
"Ever since they came to the United States they've had an American cellist," said James Wilson, a native of Ann Arbor, Mich., who has played cello for the Shanghai Quartet since 1990. "Their Chinese cellist left when they came to the States. They had an American woman with them for a few years, then I joined."
The Shanghai Quartet makes its Worcester debut in Mechanics Hall Feb. 6 in a concert for the International Artists Series.
