Abstract

Every year, more than 8,000 children will be diagnosed with cerebral palsy (Cerebral Palsy Source, 2005). Research has been done on children with this diagnosis. However, there is minimal research in the literature about aging in this population. This systematic literature review explores the implications of aging with cerebral palsy (CP). Understanding the impact of this developmental disability can help occupational therapy practitioners provide the best interventions possible for adults with this diagnosis. A number of databases were used to find articles relating to the topics of “cerebral palsy” and “aging”. This systematic literature review found three key themes based on the research literature: cerebral palsy is a lifelong condition; it affects the aging process in several ways which vary from person to person; there are a variety of services and interventions that may be beneficial.
