Casino gambling: The lived experiences of women over the age of 40
by Sims, Francine, Ph.D., Capella University, 2007, 109 pages; AAT 3286023

Abstract (Summary)

This qualitative study was designed to explore the lived experiences of women 40 years or older who participate in casino gambling a minimum of three times per month. A qualitative phenomenological research model based on Giorgi's model of phenomenological research was utilized in this study. Each of the six participants responded to the same 10 questions on the interview schedule. The interviews were digitally audio-recorded and later transcribed verbatim. The interviews were conducted in a private room at a public library of the participants' choice. The analysis of the schedule interview yielded four themes: Motivation, socializations, thoughts and feelings on winning/losing, and reflections on overall gambling activity. Prior studies have acknowledged a definite gender role difference among casino gamblers. However, there has been limited research addressing the increase in female gamblers and specific concerns that accompany female gamblers in general. This study will offer psychologists, treatment facilities, the gaming industry, and others associated with casino gambling a better understanding of the lived experience of women who participate in casino gambling.
