Copyright National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials Jan/Feb 2004Through its very first low-income housing initiative, St. John Apostle Catholic Church's outreach ministry erected a modular duplex near downtown Evansville, Ind.
The four prefabricated modular units used to construct the duplex were built nearby in Illinois and put into place within four hours. Each unit of the duplex has a living room, half-bath, and kitchen on the first floor and two bed-rooms and a full bath on the second floor.
Evansville's Department of Metropolitan Development covered 75 percent of the cost, with the church contributing the remainder. The property was donated to the church, which decided to give the property to its outreach ministry to see how it could be used. The outreach ministry determined there was a need for more quality housing in the neighborhood.
