Abstract

The current study is the first to assess the moderating effect of provocation ambiguity on alcohol-primed aggression. In addition, it is the first to employ a physical measure of aggressive behavior in investigating the effect of priming alcohol on aggression. Participants were primed with either alcohol or neutral cues followed by a high ambiguity provocation, low ambiguity provocation, or a no provocation control. There was a significant interaction between prime content and provocation ambiguity. Specifically, alcohol priming only augmented aggression when paired with a highly ambiguous provocation. Implications for the reduction of aggression and directions for future research are discussed.
