In 2005, Paul Hartmann Pty Ltd continues its investment in clinical education and training on wound management for the nursing profession via sponsored articles in the Australian Nursing Journal. Compression therapy is essential to the successful treatment of venous leg ulcers. It is as an active therapy used to heal ulcers as well as to prevent recurrence1.
Studies show that venous ulcers are prevalent in 1-2 per cent of the general population, rising to 3 per cent in the over 65 years age group2.
The venous system of the lower leg comprises deep veins, superficial and communicating veins. Leg ulcérations develop when there is disease or damage to the structure of veins. Treatment of the underlying pathophysiology of the venous system is imperative to facilitate healing of leg ulcers.
