Abstract

The quality of central integration of sensory information has been proposed as a hypothesis explaining idiopathic scoliosis. In order to verify this hypothesis, the postural control of eight scoliotic patients and nine control subjects was studied through various sensory transitions (vision and proprioception of the ankle). Subjects stood on a force platform and stared at a visual target in front of them. They had the task of remaining stable. Sensory transitions included periods of seeing and not seeing as well as the insertion of proprioceptive bias (tendon co-vibration). Scoliotic patients did not seem to benefit from the added sensory information during the reintegration of proprioception in the context of non-vision. They did not seem to be more affected than the control subjects when this information was withdrawn. Central integration seems to differ between the two groups.
