Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which affects principally the respiratory system is frequently associated with peripheral muscle dysfunction and weight loss. This last parameter is a well-known predictor of mortality in patients with COPD. The nature of the link between weight loss and mortality is unknown. However, we do know that weight loss is associated with preferential loss of muscle mass. The aim of this study was to show that the decrease in muscle mass, evaluated by mid-thigh muscle cross-sectional area, is a better predictor of mortality than total weight loss. The results of this study show that the decrease of pulmonary function and muscle mass loss are the two main predictors of mortality in patients with COPD.
