Abstract

It is well known that lung patients have a limited capacity for exercise. The importance of muscular fatigue as a limiting symptom has already been highlighted, although there is no consensus on its origin. We suggest that there may be generalized muscle weakness and that the muscles of the lower limbs are particularly affected. The strength and muscular surface area of the lower limbs have a significant relationship with bronchial obstruction and maximum exercise capacity. It seems that the atrophy demonstrated using axial tomography at the quadriceps level is largely caused by deconditioning following prolonged inactivity.
