Abstract

The University of Wyoming is mandated to ensure accessibility, service, liberal practical and technical educational opportunities that are directly relevant to a broad segment of the population. Although supported in educational theory experiential courses are traditionally limited by conventional academic programs.

Grounded in multi-disciplinary traditions, UW's, American Studies experiential courses meet the university's mandate by engaging students in experiential service projects. Emphasizing interdisciplinary collaborative approaches, American Studies develops and nurtures partnerships that involve institutions, students and citizens. Field courses include cultural resource activities wherein students assist with federally managed cultural resource undertakings and cooperate with individuals and organizations.

Rooted in the University of Wyoming's mission, American Studies field courses are withering. Examination and comparison with similar courses identifies future program possibilities for stabilization, sustainability, expansion and permanence within the UW American Studies program.
