SUMMARY
The aim of the study was to examine teachers' didactic projects in connection with constructing co-narratives with very young children during mealtimes. As a genre, co-narrative practice has a special quality for didactic work with children from one to three years old. Yet it is not always common in preschools for the teachers to talk to children in extended discourses. The joint meaning-making and negotiation processes involved nine children one to three years old and three preschool1 teachers. Close observation and analysis unfolded cultural values inscribed in teacher practices. Eight different patterns of teacher practice were identified, and these are exemplified with co-narratives. As the empirical data reveal, the teachers are not necessarily bound by their teaching plans to implement the initiatives and objectives specified. A practice in which adults and children participate in negotiations regarding what is worth talking about gradually unfolds. The article questions the commonly held notion that teachers are representatives of a culture and children are culture-adapters. It demonstrates how teachers adjust to anticipated contributions by the children. Thus, the study revealed that, in accordance with this practice of negotiation, it was two of the boys in the group that were primarily responsible for setting the cultural agenda and influencing the everyday curriculum. An individual child-adjusted practice also came to the forefront.
