are contaminants a concern?
We have learned that animals that live in the sea tend to have contaminants stored in their blubber. Therefore, people who eat a lot of blubber tend to have higher contaminants levels compared to people who eat only land animals. It is difficult to understand the potential risk that contaminants may cause but research is now being conducted that will hopefully tell us more.
if you are concerned about contaminants, what can you do?
Contaminants are present in fish and animals in the North, like everywhere else around the world, but the levels are low enough that people can make choices about what they would like to eat without worrying too much about contaminants. Knowing a little about where contaminants are found in animals, and in which animals can help you make informed choices about eating country foods.

Remember: The important thing is that you get enough to eat, and that you eat a variety of good healthy foods, whether you are a man or a woman, young or old, country foods are an important part of a healthy diet for everyone.
So, when you have the choice and if you are concerned about contaminants you can do things like eating younger animals or choosing species that are lower in contaminants and still high in nutrients like Arctic char and caribou.
