Copyright Film Society of Lincoln Center Sep/Oct 2005Often associated, much to his delight, with the "women's picture," Pedro Almodóvar began principal photography on Volver this past July. The title, Spanish for "return," rings with multiple meanings: it revives the aforementioned ladies' flick (after Bad Education), takes Almodóvar back to his native La Mancha (where the film is being shot), and reunites him with Carmen Maura, his original muse, with whom he has not worked since Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown in 1988. Penélope Cruz and new Almodovar chica designate Yohana Cobo complete the cast. The film, which the director describes as "a sort of domestic version of Indiana Jones," revolves around a woman, her daughter, and her granddaughter, and their generational tensions-with a dollop of Almodóvar's mother stirred in for good measure. "It's partly an interior dialogue with the memory of her," he says.
