Abstract (Summary)

Futures trading has exploded since 1970. As the number of futures markets has grown and the number of participants increased, numerous policy questions regarding futures markets and their regulation have arisen. Many of the most important of these policy questions are discussed by the articles in this volume. In assessing regulations that will influence how futures markets will evolve, it is useful to know how futures markets have behaved in the past. This article provides that historical perspective.
