Vice President of Health Care Banking
Fifth Third Bank
Age: 36
Elsbrock has enjoyed plenty of success as a commercial banker, but will never be accused of taking the career too seriously.
Consider this fine from his resume: "Can wiggle my ears better than anyone and perform unbelievable tricks with a show lariat."
When questioned about his skills, Elsbrock admitted the rope part "was a he, but I can wiggle my ears."
Fortunately for his employer,
Fifth Third Bancorp, Elsbrock has other abilities. In 1989, he started a new commercial-banking division at
Fifth Third to focus on the health care market. By 1997, the effort had produced $85 million in deposits and a $135 million loan portfolio for
Fifth Third, whose clients include Christ, University, Bethesda and Good Samaritan hospitals, as well as the UC Physicians medical group.
Another sign of the division's success: Elsbrock was promoted to vice president in 1985, at the age of 31. Elsbrock is a Moeller High School and
University of Cincinnati graduate, who figures he'll spend his entire career at
Fifth Third.
"It's been a great place to build wealth and they've trusted me with the authority to make decisions," he said.
Elsbrock fives in Mount Lookout with his wife, Sheila, and four sons, who range in age from 2 to 7. A "reluctant runner," Elsbrock is training to compete in his first marathon, Cincinnati's Flying Pig event, May 14. Elsbrock has been an active supporter of the Wellness Community. a support agency for families fighting cancer. With co-worker Joe Desch, Elsbrock started an annual benefit for the agency, which raised $150,000 over an eight-year period.
Elsbrock and Desch also teamed up to launch an annual fish fry for St. Mary's Church in Mount Lookout, where their families are parishioners.
"It was an entitlement issue," he explained. "Can you imagine a Catholic church without a fish fry?"
