The purpose of this study was to examine and analyze the institutional mechanisms and environmental linkages of the Addis Abeba University (1961-1981). Specifically, it was to determine (1) the institutionality of AAU, (2) the survival potential of AAU, and (3) the unique characteristics acquired by AAU during the period under review.
The study used the Academic Institution-Building Model (AIBM) as a research framework. Data for the study were collected from an on-site visit. Interviews were conducted and a questionnarie administered with central academic administrative officers, deans, and directors of institutes.
Findings indicated that the Addis Abeba University had acquired a level of institutionality during the first decade of its founding. While national social, economic, cultural and political changes have affected the continued growth of the University, the study suggests that the Unversity continues to play a vital role in Ethiopia's developmental efforts.
The study further concluded that the University should seek to maintain a balance between its programs and its resources if it is to continue to provide quality services.
Finally, the study recommends that a more defined relationship be developed between the University and (1) its sponsoring bodies and (2) its constituencies to enhance the effectiveness of its programs in meeting national needs.
