Northern Michigan University is known today as a school offering education in a variety of specialty areas, but historically, the facility began as school for individuals interested in becoming school teachers. This thesis explored the history of teacher training practices at Northern State Normal School, Northern State Teachers College, and Northern Michigan College of Education between 1899-1953. Literature used to train teachers during the presented time period was examined; interviews were conducted with seven teachers who graduated before 1953.
