Browse Topics

You can browse the list of terms, or enter a term in the find field and click Find Term to locate it.

When you have found a term you want to add to your search, select the operator to use when adding the term, and click Add to Search.

Find a term

The terms listed in the Browse Topics list are based on terms found in the ProQuest thesaurus, a set of specialized terms used to categorize information in ProQuest. They are listed in alphabetical order, making it easy for you to browse them.

Scan the list for the term you want to use for your search.

Jump to terms starting with a particular letter by entering a letter or term in the Jump to box and clicking Go.

You can also search for a term. Enter the term in the box and select whether you want ProQuest to Suggest Topics or Look up Topics A-Z, then click Find Term.

  • When you select Suggest Topics, ProQuest will suggest similar topics to the term you have entered. For example, if you enter Math, ProQuest will suggest such things as Mathematics education and Mathematics education AND Teaching.
  • When you select Look up Topics A-Z, you will be taken to the nearest match (alphabetically).

If you reach the end of a page and haven't come to the term you want, you can use the Next and Previous links to move to another page.

When you've found the word you're looking for, click Add to Search to add the term to your current search, or click Narrow to narrow the search using related terms.

Narrow your search

Click Narrow to narrow the search using related terms.

For example, if you are looking for information about air bags in General Motors vehicles you would use the Subjects list to find Air Bags. Then, click Narrow to view only those index terms that are related. In the narrowed list, you will see General Motors. Click Add to Search and ProQuest will display documents matching the focused search subject(air bags) AND company(general motors corp).

Add a term to your search

Once you have found a term, select the operator to use when adding the term to your search and click Add to Search.

Select an operator for adding terms

You can add the terms you find to your search using AND, OR, or AND NOT.

Filter your terms

You can filter your terms by categories:

  • People lists famous or important people you're likely to want to include in your search. Names do not represent authors of documents contained in the ProQuest collections.
  • Locations lists geographical names, such as the names of cities, nations, landmarks, or regions.
  • Companies lists corporations, businesses, organizations, and other groups, such as performers.
  • Subjects lists keywords.
  • All topics displays the terms in all these categories.

View the Thesaurus

You can switch to the Thesaurus by clicking Thesaurus at the top of the window.
