NAICS codes let you search for documents on a specific industry. When you use the codes with search words, NAICS codes are a fast way to precisely target a search by industry. You can quickly add NAICS codes to your search by using the Look up NAICS/SIC codes link.

Using the Look up NAICS/SIC codes to Focus Your Search

ProQuest gives you an easy way to focus your search within specific industries by using the Look up NAICS/SIC codes link. To add a specific industry to your search from a Basic or Advanced Search:

1. Click the More Search Options link.
2. Select the desired operator to use when adding the industry from the drop-down menu before the NAICS code field.
3. Click the Look up NAICS/SIC codes link next to the NAICS code field.
4. Click the industry category that contains the desired industry. You see a list of subcategories and industries related to the category you chose.
5. Click the subcategory that matches the information you want most closely.
6. When you've reached the end of the hierarchy, you will see Add to Search next to the industries that can be added to the search.
7. Click Add to Search next to the industry you want to add to your search.

Finding Documents with NAICS Codes

You should use the most specific code possible. Remember, the codes don't cascade. If you enter 22 (Utilities), your search won't find any records. If you want to broaden the search to include multiple codes, you need to use the truncation character (*). For example, to find information on the use of genetic engineering in farming, you would search for genetic engineering AND naic(11*).

To enter NAICS or SIC codes using the truncation character, you will need to enter the search values using the mnemonic, and not through the Look up NAICS/SIC codes window.

Finds documents about HR Block and Tax Preparation Services (NAICS code 541213).

policy AND naic(22*)
Finds documents on utility policies, since NAICS code 22 covers electric, water, and gas utilities.
