Configuring Your Browser

If you are using ProQuest for the first time, you may want to review the following requirements for your Internet browser:

  • Use Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 or later, or Netscape Navigator browser versions 4.75, or 6.01 or higher. It is recommended that you use Netscape Navigator 6.01 or higher and Internet Explorer 5.01 or higher.
  • Enable JavaScript (enabled by default). If you disable JavaScript, ProQuest interface features will not operate properly.
  • Install Adobe Reader.
  • Accept cookies.

The following instructions will guide you through the steps needed to configure these browser options. If you have questions, refer to your browser's help menu, or contact ProQuest Electronic Technical Support at 800-889-3358. International clients can call +1-734-761-4700 extension 2513.

Install Adobe Reader

ProQuest provides document page images in Adobe PDF (Portable Document Format) format. To view these documents, you need Adobe Reader installed on your system. If you do not have it, you can download Adobe Reader for free

Accept Cookies

Cookies let the server side of a connection (in this case, the ProQuest CSA server) and the client side of the connection (your computer) track information about a particular session. By using cookies, we can keep track of your pending document retrievals and your display and search options for the current ProQuest session.

Cookies are not used by ProQuest CSA to collect marketing information or for any other purpose other than to make using our products as easy and efficient as possible.

Most browsers provide an option for alerting you when cookies are used. If this option is checked, you will see an alert dialog when using ProQuest. To prevent the alert dialog from displaying every time cookie information is transferred, you should disable this alert mechanism and allow our server to accept cookies.

If using Netscape Navigator 7.x:

  1. Click Preferences on the Edit menu.
  2. Double-click the Privacy and Security category.
  3. Click Cookies.
  4. Click Cookie Manager.
  5. Click the Cookie Sites tab.
  6. Type umi.com in the text box at the top.
  7. Click Allow.
  8. Click Close.
  9. Click OK.

If using Netscape Navigator 4.75 or later:

  1. Click Preferences on the Edit menu.
  2. Click the Advanced category.
  3. Clear the check box next to Warn me before accepting a cookie.
  4. Click OK.

If using Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x:

  1. Click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Click the Custom Level button.
  4. Scroll to the Cookies section.
  5. Select Enable under Allow cookies that are stored on your computer.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click Apply.
  8. Click OK.

If using Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x:

  1. Click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
  2. Click the Privacy tab.
  3. Click the Edit button.
  4. Type umi.com in the Address of the Web Site box.
  5. Click the Allow Button.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click Apply.
  8. Click OK.

If using Mozilla Firefox 1.x:

  1. Click Options on the Tools menu.
  2. Click Privacy.
  3. Click Cookies.
  4. Click Exceptions.
  5. Type umi.com in the Address of the Web Site box.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click OK.

If using Safari on Mac OSX:

  1. Click Preferences on the Safari menu.
  2. Click Security.
  3. Click the Always radio button.
  4. Click the red X to close.
